“IF I ALWAYS DO WHAT I ALWAYS DID, THEN I WILL ALWAYS GET WHAT I ALWAYS GOT”.
I don’t think traditional driver training always works, I need to change my attitude.
Driving is a complex task which consists of skills &, knowledge on various aspects of road & traffic procedures. Driver training in Britain involves a traditional approach;-does this fulfil the main objective of “Safe driving for life”? as promoted by the Driving Standards Agency. Some say “No”; it should be avoiding accidents & preparing drivers for life.
Driver skill & attitude are two key areas which determine your approach to being behind the wheel. How much skill & attitude training have I done? What is my state of mind? The DSA guide to driving states a good driver needs a good attitude which involves responsibility, patience & confidence. Am I any of these?
What is attitude & how do you train for it? Is it knowledge? I think it maybe a state of mind? “I know the speed limit is 30. Do I keep within it? It is illegal to use a hand held mobile phone whilst driving or supervising a learner driver, do I stop in a safe place before I use my phone? If I want to change my behaviour, I must change what I feel, see and hear before I start to drive & this will result in better behaviour & I will need a great trainer to help me.
Accidents ruin lives: personal injury, loss of earnings & Insurance costs run into billions of pounds. Unfortunately drivers are to blame for accidents. I was training a client, who had an accident which caused absolute chaos, he was overtaking at 60mph in a 30mph zone, why was he travelling so fast?, he said “I was late for college”. This type of driver behaviour can be changed. We must invest in our self development in order that we become responsible for our behaviour.
In order to take responsibity for my driving and ultimately my life, I need to change and do what I do for the better, what other people do is what other people do. Because if I always do what I always did, then I will get what I always got.
